Sustainability

Paris Agreement

Adopted in 2015 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreementis an international treaty aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5–2°C above pre-industrial levels.

Its objective is to prevent irreversible climate impacts by controlling temperature increases resulting from industrialization. Under this framework, countries commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

European Green Deal

The European Green Deal is a comprehensive growth and transformation strategy that aims to make the European Union the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050.

It seeks to align economic development with environmental sustainability by promoting emission reductions, resource efficiency, and circular economy principles across industries.

CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism)

As part of the Green Deal, the European Union has introduced the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

This system considers the carbon content of imported goods to ensure fair competition and to encourage low-carbon production.
Sectors such as cement, steel, aluminum, and fertilizers are directly affected by this regulation.

Importance for Türkiye

Türkiye, due to its high industrial production capacity, is considered a carbon-intensive economy, particularly in sectors such as cement, steel, and chemicals, which account for a significant share of national greenhouse gas emissions.

This reality necessitates a comprehensive transformation to achieve the country’s 2053 net-zero emission target under the Paris Agreement.

At the same time, the European Green Deal and CBAM mark a new era in Türkiye’s trade with the European Union. Exporters to the EU will be taxed based on the carbon intensity of their products, creating substantial financial burdens for companies that do not adopt low-carbon production technologies.

Therefore, sustainable production, energy efficiency, and green chemistry are no longer merely environmental considerations — they are strategic imperatives for maintaining Türkiye’s global competitiveness.
